Telecom Industry Transition: WiFi, VoIP, WiMax - The Wireless Age is Already Here

VoIP on WiMax will make the latest 3G technologies obsolete before they are completely installed. The reason is because 3G cell phone technology is capable of 2Mbs while WiFi is at 11Mbs in bursts and WiMax will be even greater therefore 3G is not needed as VoIP over WiMax is going to provide more data, faster speeds and greater numbers of users. WiFi and WiMax may actually solve the goals of conquering the digital divide. There will be a small price for this disruptive technology. There will be small legal battles fought such as this one over territory with government agencies and private sector. In the WiFi Online Newsletter commenting on a Wall Street Journal Article we saw Verizon fighting with the City of Philadelphia over their city wide WiFi and if you think about it they do potentially have quite a bit to lose don't they?

There will also be issues with frequency pollution from other uses in close proximity of the frequency band being sent out. There will be issues with the human biological system, birds, animals and pets. There will also layoffs caused by such disruption and some bluff layoffs to sway political intervention thru careful manipulation of "K-Street" style guerilla lobbying. There will also be issues with first to market and frequency allocations from the FCC. There will be consumer complaints due to bandwidth being used up and services too slow for users.

There are already some heated battles going on with the use of power lines to deliver Internet to the home because it will disrupt Ham Operators. The layoffs in Telecom have been astronomical in recent years. New technologies while they give the industry new life, new directions to grow they also provide for some fierce competition between players. One of the most recent issues was the VoIP FCC ruling, which said that VoIP couldn't be taxed by states, as it is an Internet Service not a phone service. This was a major ruling for the VoIP Industry and will add billions of dollars in capital from investment banks and venture capital firms.

Recently I was at a WiFi Verizon Hot Spot and there were six people with computers there, two playing video games on the Internet, One using VoIP another downloading a big file, needless to say surfing at any acceptable speed or collecting 1000 emails (most 90% SPAM) was out of the question. Although patrons have paid $19.95 per month for internet access there will be issues with speed and bandwidth as the Internet is soaked up by VoIP and excessive emails. WiMax promises to solve this problem with speeds of 75MB per second as opposed to the WiFi burst speeds of 11MB or the mobile satellite solutions at 1-2 MB per second. Still all of these solutions blow out of the water the old dial up speeds. 3G Wireless was thought to be the savior, yet with speeds on the very lowest end of the spectrum, even devices like the Blackberry (RIMM), or the AT & T iGO do not stand a chance on such services.

Right now 3G network is nearly complete and works good for phone calls and instant messaging, but is quite lacking for video or picture emailing. As new devices come out such as movie watching, music downloads, projection video, hologram messages, 3G, 4G even 5G and what some in the industry call 6G will not be able to use with the current 3G towers across the nation. Even with 1000:1 algorithm compression there is a limit on the devices and system. The Telecom Industry has taken a huge hit in the last five years with massive layoffs, accounting irregularities and overpriced bidding for frequency allocation, which amounted to investments based on pie in the sky wishful thinking potential consumer numbers even from a monopolistic standpoint, it was simply not possible. The frenzy to over pay for these frequencies was out of control and we saw the fallout occur as predicted by many an insider.

So how does the future look now? Well, all in all things are looking good, we have capital flows to new entrants, large corporations finding partners and re-investing profits in an industry which seems to have new life blood and can be called anything but static.

Did You Know Everything In Your Dream Is About YOU?

Carl Jung, 20th century psycho analyst and dream researcher, said: "A dream is a theatre in which the dreamer is the scene, the player, the prompter, the producer, the author, the public and the critic."

Dreams are like a play with you taking the part of all the characters and the scenery. Usually every symbol in your dream represents some aspect of YOU. Your sub-conscious is telling you a story about what's really going on for you.

All you have to do is find the relation between the symbol and yourself and relate it to your waking life and you'll get the message.

"Huh?!" I hear you say. Here's an example ? albeit a dramatic one!

Say you dream about being in a large, extravagant house. You go down a staircase and find yourself in a dark basement. A hooded man appears, but you can't see his face. He's got a knife and is trying to stab you. You try to run away but he catches you and suddenly you see your blood all over the floor. Then you notice that the hooded man is your boss!

"So how does this relate to me?" you ask.

Here are 4 easy steps to find out.

Step One - Write down each key symbol

In this dream, they would be:

- Extravagant house

- Descending staircase

- Dark

- Basement

- Hooded man

- Knife stabbing you

- Running away

- Blood on the floor

- Your boss

Step Two - Work out the meaning of each symbol

Using your own intuition or a reputable dream symbol resource give each symbol a meaning:

Extravagant house ? a house signifies your self-esteem and how secure you feel about yourself. A large, extravagant house could indicate that you're feeling insecure and overwhelmed by something in your life ? that you've bitten off more than you can chew.

Descending staircase ?in this dream means going down into your sub-conscious [symbolized by the basement] usually to seek out your suppressed fears [the issues that you don't want to face in your waking thoughts].

Dark ? darkness almost always signifies something hidden from your waking mind. It's dark because you are not consciously aware of it.

Basement ? represents your sub-conscious

Hooded man ? any character or creature that is cloaked, hidden, hooded, unclear or shadowy usually represents your own hidden or suppressed fears.

Knife stabbing you ? obviously means something potentially very harmful

Running away ? obviously means trying to escape

Blood ? means your life force, your energy and vitality

Your boss ? well, is your boss!

Step Three - Apply the meaning of the symbol to YOU

Imagine that YOU are each of the symbols in your dream. You'll note [from the symbolism in Step Two] that most of the meanings already relate back to you.

Extravagant house ? YOU are feeling insecure and overwhelmed

Descending staircase ? YOU are sub-consciously trying to understand and face your fears

Dark basement, hooded man ? YOU recognize that you have hidden issues and fears

Knife stabbing you ? YOU are harming yourself

Running away ? YOU are trying to escape

Blood ? YOU are draining your energy

Your boss ? YOU are like your boss in some way

Step Four - Relate these meanings to aspects of YOUR waking life

Take each symbol and relate the meaning to real circumstances you are dealing with in your life RIGHT NOW. Remember, your dream messages offer you guidance that you can use right away.

You'll see why you are the best person to make sense of your own dreams. No one would know the answers to these questions except you! I've just given examples to complete the exercise:

Extravagant house ? in which area of your life do you feel overwhelmed and insecure? Work, competitive sport, finances, for example?

Knife stabbing you ? how are you harming yourself? Are you overdoing something ? exercise, work or have you over-extended yourself financially?

Dark basement, hooded man ? what are your fears? Performance anxiety at work or in your sport? Do you fear financial ruin? Running away ? your reaction is to try to escape, but ?

Blood ? you are draining your energy. You can't keep up this pretence for much longer. It will exhaust you.

Your boss ? what aspects of your boss do you feel you have? Are you bossy like him/her? Are you compassionate like him/her? Do you have his/her leadership qualities that could solve your problem?

So you see, every aspect of your dream represents something about YOU. All you have to do is learn to understand the language of your dreams and to translate the imagery you see with your "dream eyes" into useful information you can use in your waking life.

Your dreams show you your TRUE SELF. As Carl Jung says: "Our dreams are most peculiarly independent of our consciousness and exceedingly valuable because they cannot cheat."

What Should I Charge?

People ask me, "What should I charge?"

I say, "Ask your clients."

If they are respectable professionals you want as clients, they will be honest with you and give you a fair price based on their experience, their need, and their ability to pay. They will not try to undercut you.

And if you are a true professional, you will charge them a fair price and not try to overcharge them. You will not undercut yourself, either. You will base your price on two things: your value to their business, and the client's value to your own company. Your fee should always be based on the criterion of a good relationship. If it threatens the relationship, is it worth it?

You cannot base your price on your company policy or an annual raise, or what you're worth to your most lucrative corporate clients. You must base your price on the relationship with this one specific client and all your clients.

Shortly after I opened my business, I received a call from a chartered bank. They were experiencing difficulties with a team who managed world trading, and they needed someone to teach them a thing or two about communications. I was very excited about this opportunity. I shook their hands vigorously and we retired into a little room, where we discussed their needs and they told me the kind of written proposal they were looking for.

I listened carefully as these two women talked. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into it. I proceeded to tell them how I would approach the project and then-poor na?ve little me-I lowered my voice and almost whispered:

"I should tell you, though, that I'm not cheap. I charge $325 a day."

The two of them looked at each other and giggled.

"Did I say something funny?"

"When you submit your proposal, you had better charge us twice that, or the Manager won't look at it."

I stared at them, cleared my throat, and replied, "Certainly."

I "certainly" learned a lesson from that encounter. You don't charge a chartered bank the same fee you charge a non-profit organization. I also, unwittingly, had been given an opportunity to grow my business. When you meet a new client you have nothing to lose. Use it to take risks with your fees. Let them teach you what the going rate is, what they expect to pay. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Let clients raise your rates for you

If you provide superior service and maintain rich relationships with your clients, and help them succeed, a magical thing will happen. Your clients will raise your fees for you. You won't have to do a thing.

It takes time, but consistency and reliability are rare and valuable. If you continue to rise to the occasion when your clients need you, they will "tip" you the way diners tip servers after they have become sufficiently sloshed to feel very generous. "Here! Take another three thousand dollars, just for being so nice!" Well, not exactly that way. Here's what I mean. They will find ways to extend your contract. They will start asking why you charge less than the others, or why the others charge so much. They will refer you to other clients. They will give you different types of projects where you can be more creative about your fees.

This has happened to me a half-dozen times at least. People who enjoy working with you, and who cherish your service and your commitment, will do you important favours. I was discussing this phenomenon recently with a friend who provides production services for TV and film across North America, often for large movie-makers and other production companies. Richard has been charging such low prices compared to the competition that a client warned him, "If you don't raise your rates, my VP won't even look at you." When the invoices come in and the VP sees one company charging $185 per hour and Richard's company charging $45 per hour, the VP will get nervous about the gap and see Richard's company as far below standard. The client continued, "Richard, you've got to make it look like you're in the same game."

When a client tells you something like this, I have one word for you.

OBEY.

Are You Dissing Public Relations

If you leave a star player sitting on the bench, you could be the loser.

Look at it this way. Because you push hard to reach your sales and marketing objectives, you need the help of your top external audiences.

If you agree, what are you doing to insure their support? At the least, you need to prioritize those key target audiences and work them hard from the top down because few of us can do them all at once.

When I say work them hard from the top, I mean start by monitoring carefully how members of that most important target audience feel about your business. You must interact with them and ask a lot of questions.

Notice any negative feelings? How about misconceptions that need fixing? Any inaccurate understandings of your products and services? In short, ANY perceptions about your business that you need to alter?

With information like that in hand, you can set your public relations goal. It could be as simple as this: clear up that misconception, explain away that inaccurate understanding, or respond clearly and positively to feelings of uncertainty.

So, with your goal all set, what's next? Right! You select a strategy. Since you have only three choices, it will be an easy decision. Create opinion (perceptions) where none exist, change existing opinion, or reinforce it. Let the goal you established guide your strategy selection.

Now you go for the meat on the bone, your message. And it will need to be a specific and compelling message that clearly and creditably lays out, for example, why the rumor is dead wrong, or why that belief about the company is not only inaccurate, but unfair. In brief, the message must be both crystal-clear and very believable.

But even a first-class message does no good sitting on a shelf. It needs aggressive communications tactics to carry it to the eyes and ears of members of your key target audience, whose behaviors you wish to alter.

Fortunately for all concerned, there are dozens of communications tactics available to you. They range from emailings, speeches, press releases and face-to-face meetings to broadcast interviews, consumer briefings and open houses and a lot of others.

But the moment of truth arrives when you remonitor how members of your key target audience NOW perceive you and your business. Again, you must ask plenty of questions while attempting to highlight how, and if perceptions have been altered by your communication. What about that frighteningly inaccurate perception of your business - better than before? And the specific misconception that most of your products are made in South East Asian sweat shops. Any improvement there? And the small number of interviewees who had never even heard of your firm. Has that number been reduced?

If insufficient progress is noted, remedies include a heavier, and wider concentration on communications tactics. As would a review of, and adjustment to your message content.

The prize remains the same. Altered perceptions leading to desired behaviors that directly contribute to the success of your business.

Are You Addicted to Your Children?

Is it possible to be using our children addictively?

Anything that we use to get love, avoid pain, and fill up inner emptiness can become an addiction ? even our children! If your children are your whole life ? if you don't have a strong spiritual connection with a personal source of love and guidance, as well as other relationships and interests that you are passionate about, you might be using your children to fill an empty place within you.

If you don't have a partner or your relationship with your partner is not fulfilling to you, and you don't have deeply connected and meaningful friendships, then you might be using your kids as your major emotional connection. If you don't have hobbies or work that are compelling and fulfilling to you, you might be using your children to give meaning to your life. If you don't have a daily spiritual practice that brings love and comfort to your soul, you might be using your children to fill this need.

If this is what you are doing, it is not good for your children. It is a huge burden on children to be responsible for their parent's loneliness and sense of purpose. Children who feel this responsibility often become caretakers, giving themselves up to take care of a parent. On the other hand, a child burdened with this responsibility may rebel and distance from the parent, spending less and less time at home to avoid the burden of the parent's emptiness.

I grew up as an only child with a mother who had nothing fulfilling in her life ? other than me. Her whole focus was on me, and because I couldn't possibly fill her up in the way she needed to be filled, she was often angry at me. I became a good little girl, a good caretaker of my mother, but the result was that I was a nervous and unhappy child, and wanted to be away from my house as much as possible.

Our children need to be a part of our life, not our whole life. We need to role-model for them what it looks like to take personal responsibility for filling ourselves up. We need to show them what it looks like to take responsibility for making ourselves happy, rather than rely on them for our happiness. Your children want to know that they are important to you, but not so important that your well-being is dependent upon them. You might want to explore the following questions to see if you may be using your children addictively:

  • Do you have a solid spiritual practice that fills you with a sense of peace and gives meaning to your life?

  • Are you expressing your particular talents in a way that feels meaningful and productive to you and gives you a sense of fulfillment?

  • Do you have fulfilling emotional connections with other adults ? a partner, other family members or friends?

If you answered "yes" to these, then you are probably not using your children addictively.

  • Do you feel bored and useless when your children are not around? Is it your children that give your life meaning?

  • Is your sense of worth attached to your children's achievements? Do you tend to take it personally if one of your children has a problem?

  • Are you over-involved in your children's lives?

  • Are you overly sensitive if one of our children is angry or distant? Do you find yourself trying to pacify your children rather than set appropriate limits in order to avoid their rejection?

  • Did you choose to have children to share the fullness of your love or did you have children in the hopes of getting love from them?

If you answered "yes" to one or more of these, then there is a good possibility that you are using your children addictively. If this is the case, the best thing you can do for you and your children is to move yourself toward a solid spiritual practice, look for meaningful ways of expressing your talents, and develop emotional connection and support from other adults.

Cell Phone Safety - Am I Really At Risk

It's a sad commentary on the way of the world today, when you stop to think about the fact that people will go out of their way to avoid radiation exposure ? such as in the case of x-ray technicians who shield themselves within a protective booth or by donning lead aprons ? and, yet, those same people will walk around, day after day, with a cell phone attached to their ears without concern. Cell phones, cellular phones, mobile phones, wireless phones...call them what you will ? without proper precautions, they can still pose a significant threat to those who use them.

SAR Absorption

The CTIA ? or, Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association ? has defined SAR (specific absorption rate) as "a way of measuring the quantity of radio frequency energy that is absorbed by the body". In plain English, SAR indicates the amount of radiation that your body is being directly exposed to through the use of devices such as cell phones. Every time you use a cell phone, you're holding a machine to your head that sends electromagnetic waves directly to your brain. These waves, which are the equivalent of microwave energy, are transmitted to the brain through cell phone antennas and ? depending upon how close that receptor is to your head, as much as 60% of that radiation is absorbed. So much so, in fact, that they can penetrate 1 ?" into the actual brain. That was the bad news...even worse is that many models exceed that limit. In effect, you're slow-cooking your brain in the very same way that a microwave oven cooks dinner on a busy day.

Through various studies, evidence has indicated that there's been a significant increase in brain tumor occurrences among cell phone users. In addition, researchers have also discovered that the impact of cell phone frequencies (which cause the brain to be bombarded by radiation or microwave energy) also appears to cause genetic damage within human blood. It's believed that the auto-immune system is negatively impacted, as well. The potential for long-term adverse affects, then, is astounding and may include diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Children and Cell Phone Safety

If all of that concerns you ? as well it should ? then think, for a moment, about how many children are using these phones on a regular basis. You'd be hard-pressed in today's society to find a child or teen who doesn't, at some point in the day, have one pressed to their ear. The odds of developing something devastating are even more likely, since their skulls are thinner and their brains are still in the process of growing. Between that and the fact that, due to their age, the number of cumulative years in which they'd receive exposure to the harmful radiation that's associated with these phones will be greater than those of an older generation, it's a frightening prospect, indeed.

Although it's certainly a great convenience to be able to carry a portable phone around in your purse or pocket, and has ? in some cases ? helped to save the life of someone in jeopardy by enabling folks to dial 911 without having to search for a nearby phone, it's not an even trade-off and children should never use such devices, except in an emergency. One of the biggest problems that parents may face today is that, since cell phones are convenient ? and popular among young people ? keeping their children cell-phone-free may be next to impossible. Whether it's necessary to have youngsters stay in communication with family members when they're away from home or simply to use in the event of an emergency, many parents feel forced into providing them for their kids and don't give much thought to the possible dangers that their children may be exposed to, as a result.

Reducing the Risks

Cell phone safety must be made more of a priority by adults and children alike. Until such time when the dangers that are intrinsic to these types of devices have been nullified, there are certain steps that can ? and should ? be taken by those who find it necessary to use phones such as these.

  • Only use a cell or mobile phone when necessary
  • Limit the length of your conversations when utilizing a cell phone
  • Invest in a hands-free set-up so that the phone's antenna isn't near your head
  • Purchase a cell phone with an external aerial
  • Research the SAR for the unit that you're thinking of purchasing
  • Invest in a SAR Shield for your cell phone

Giving Finances a Breather Through Loans for Unemployed

Martin graduated of the college with dreams of a highflying career. However, the subsequent unemployment put a check on his dreams. It has now become a matter of making the ends meet because of the various debts mounting up on his account and the unemployment allowance falling deficient of meeting even the basic needs.

Almost every unemployed person faces a situation similar to the above until they are exposed to loans for unemployed. Loans for unemployed present various options before unemployed people to enable them to purchase the various necessities along with a lump sum payment for repayment of debts, buying holidays, and for purchasing cars.

Stable financial income is a prerequisite for the normal loans. Going by this logic, an unemployed person would have never qualified for a normal loan because of an absence of any source of income. However, since unemployment is not a rare incident and because the unemployed people cannot be left to fend for themselves (humanitarian grounds), loan providers have designed a few criteria that will make the unemployed people eligible for financial assistance.

Being a homeowner minimises most of the risk emanating out of unemployment. The loan provider knows that in the event of the borrower not repaying the loan in full, it can utilise the home to recover the amount unpaid. The minor degree of risk is reflected in a lower rate of interest and more flexible terms.

The home kept as collateral, has more of a nominal rather than a tangible role in the Loans for unemployed. The loan provider holds the right of ownership to the house rather than the house itself. Thus, the borrower continues living in the home while the home continues backing the loan.

To be more concise, the loan for unemployed is taken against the equity in the home. This is the value, in terms of money, that a house will fetch if sold in the market. As a loan is taken, the equity in the home depletes. The equity is gradually replenished with monthly or quarterly repayments.

The method that a borrower chooses to benefit from the loan for unemployed further classifies them into two. These are Home Equity Loan and a Home Equity Line of Credit better known as a HELOC. Under a home equity loan, a borrower draws the entire amount at one count. This is particularly when the borrower has sizable expenses to make. Debt consolidation is the most popular use to which the home equity loan is put to. The small unemployment grant from the government is not able to sustain the borrower's expenses during the term of unemployment, and a mound of debts gets collected during the period. Cheap finance through home equity loans will present an easier method to repay such debts. Another important uses that a home equity loan is employed to are buying a car, paying the bills incurred while vacationing, and using it for home improvements, that in turn adds up to the equity in the home and thus opens newer opportunities for getting loans.

A home equity loan however, will not suit the cases where the period of unemployment is predicted to last long. Having used up the entire equity in home, the borrower will be left with nothing to pay for his necessities during the subsequent period. In this case, a home equity line of credit will be more suitable. HELOC provides assistance to the borrower as and when the needs arise. Since the balance of the HELOC changes regularly with the repayments and withdrawals, the borrower is charged on the loan amount drawn rather than the entire loan sanctioned. The interest in HELOC is charged on the basis of the standard variable rate. This proves disadvantageous for borrowers at times when there is an upward surge in the interest rate. The interest rates rise and increase the repayments in turn. A novel method of escaping the high interest rates will be by requesting for a guaranteed introductory rate.

The financial options for unemployed people without sufficient collateral are no less. A perfect credit report will play an important role in their case by inspiring confidence among the loan providers regarding the borrower's capability to repay loans for unemployed.
